Day 14 = 111 Shares

Sorry for all the confusion yesterday, we had a problem publishing because of the size of the picture files, so hopefully that won’t be a problem from now on.

Earlier today we attended UCLAN where I have been offered a place on the fine BA Hons Fine Art Degree course which is great because I have no academic qualifications, and I was offered a place purely on the grounds of the quality of my portfolio. One of the lecturers told me that nobody there would be able to show me anything I couldn’t already do with regard of my portraiture abilities, so I took this as a compliment, which of course it was, but I told him that wasn’t why I wanted to do the degree anyway. Rather, I want to explore other things, concepts which I haven’t encountered, I want to discover other ways of expressing my creativity. That doesn’t mean I will stop doing portraiture, you don’t just stop doing something you are good at, but that is something I will  continue to do in my own time, like I do now.

The tricky bit now of course is to convince my employers that I can continue to do shift work, and, the 16 hours per week to do the degree course. The lecturer who paid me the compliment reassured me by telling me he was a mature student in full time employment working shifts when he sat his degree, so it’s not impossible, besides which I have waited for over forty years for this opportunity so I have to make the most of it.

As anyone who has read anything I have written in this blog will know, I’m not kidding myself, I don’t believe that a mega rich benefactor is going to discover me and sponsor my career. Nothing will be handed to me on a plate, and I’m not a childish dreamer, I had my illusions shattered when I was still young enough to believe that it might be possible to be the great artist. Through no fault of my own and because I had no other option, I turned my back on my art once before, but you see, whatever outcome develops, this is my destiny, I was meant to tread this path.

Thank you for your patience, good luck and best wishes with the competition,

Tony and Karina

The clocks have gone forward, it’s Easter this next weekend, and Karina and I will be exhibiting some of our work at the Higham Exhibition which is in the school and church buildings. On Good Friday Karina will be doing a craft demonstration when she will be building one of her beautiful paper prams, whilst my pictures will be hung in the school building, so if you’re stuck for something to do next weekend, why not pop along to have a look at our work as it is meant to be seen. It is one thing to see pictures or craft items on a computer screen, but altogether a completely different experience to stand next to them where you can scruitinize thier quality.

Karina has a stock of items for sale on the actual days over the Easter weekend, and a selection of my art prints and abstracts will be available to order. They will hang until the Easter Monday, meaning, if you would like to purchase one they will be produced in a batch of limited edition prints which will of course be numbered and hand signed.

We will have point of sale material in the form of business cards and leaflets with all our contact details.

Good luck and best wishes with the competition,

Tony and Karina

Day 12 = 104 shares!

It’s weekend again and people are busy with family, having a good time or simply chilling, but whatever they are doing traffic on Facebook definately slows right down. For this reason I decided to slip in a picture of the first painting I did when I first started creating art again. This is an A5 copy of a Franz Merc painting,  called appropriately, “Yellow Horses”.

Although this was the first painting I had done it sticks out in my mind for a number of reasons, the first obviously because it was my first painting. I was really pleased with it, if anyone is familiar with the original you will know it is pretty much bob on in terms of image reproduction, the colours, and proportions are really accurate, and following an almost forty year absence from doing any artwork at all, even now, I think it is pretty outstanding.

(The fact that I would never have started again at all had it not been for my friend John West giving me a collection of art materials which his late mother-in-law had left when she passed on, and which he gave me following a conversation we had when I told him I was teaching art to my youngest daughter, I find to this day, the convergence of circumstances,  overwhelmingly wonderous! I remember at the moment when John presented the materials to me saying to him, “You have no idea what you are doing!” because that moment changed everything for me.)

Secondly, when my wife returned home from work to find me adding the finishing touches to it she went ballistic, because I was painting and hadn’t done the washing up! I knew right then I could never be happy where I was, I had tried, and tried, but some things are just not meant to be. In the end I gave it all up, apart from a hand full of silver, so I could follow the course of my nature, I just walked away from everything I had worked so hard for, all those wasted years.

Now with Karina I am happy, we don’t have much, but we have each other and we are creative, and we are trying to do something with what we have, which is mainly our creativity. So if you like what you see you can help us out by sharing this post to your own Facebook page, maybe you might encourage your friends to share it on their pages, who knows what might happen? From that moment in the office at work at 7 am, on the 18th December 2012 when John West said “There you go mate, make good use of these things”, my life was changed irrevocably, it didn’t happen all at once, but I knew right then in that very moment, that my destiny was right in front of me, and this time it was my last chance to find the real me.

Good luck and best wishes,

Tony and Karina
